Ashden interview with Armstrong Energy Global

As part of its commitment to accelerating access to clean energy, Armstrong Energy Global is pleased to be sponsoring this year’s Ashden International Conference, to be held at Kings Place in London on 9th June.  The conference’s theme of finding enterprising solutions to the energy access challenge is at the heart of Armstrong Energy Global’s social objectives, and we are keen to encourage others to join this debate.

Managing Director, Dr Ram Nandakumar says, “Like Ashden, we believe that new models for scalable sustainable energy are needed if we are to accelerate access to reliable clean energy, and we welcome the conference’s contribution to this vital journey.”

In an interview with Armstrong Energy Global’s Andrew Newman, Ashden asked why the company felt so strongly about access to energy, and the role of business to help achieve scalable change:

CONNECTION FOR MICRO GRID FUNDED BY ARMSTRONG ENERGY GLOBAL FOUNDATION

Funded by the Armstrong Energy Global Foundation, a solar mini grid has been successfully installed and connected in the remote rural village of Neelakantarayanagaddi in Karnataka, India as a social project.   The 1.2 kWp system has provided a light and mobile charging to 44 households, who live on an island in the Krishna river.  The installation was carried out by SELCO India, an award-winning social enterprise based in Bangalore.   The community is paying for the ongoing maintenance on the site, using their budget that they previously used on kerosene lamps which are both polluting and bad for health.

Managing Director of Armstrong Energy Global, Dr Ram Nandakumar, said, “We welcome the news that this mini solar grid has now been connected – it is a tribute to the SELCO team who have worked hard in a challenging remote environment to install such a valuable source of reliable electricity for the local community.  It is well recognised that the transition from kerosene lighting to solar energy is a major step forward in helping households enjoy less air pollution and create a much more positive environment to live and work.”

Armstrong Energy Global Foundation’s social projects are funded from a percentage of the revenue from Armstrong Energy Global’s commercial solar activities in India.  The Foundation aims to switch on access to energy for one million people who currently do not have access to reliable energy.

Armstrong Energy Global expands team as India solar story soars

Based in Hyderabad, the Armstrong Energy Global team is expanding its staff numbers to make the most of the strong opportunities in today’s Indian solar sector.

Since Prime Minister Modi’s election last May, the importance of India’s commitment to renewable energy has been front page news almost daily, and many states of India are launching ambitious solar and wind programmes to enhance energy security and grid reliability.  President Obama’s recent visit to India highlighted the scale of international commitment to India’s target of installing 100 GW of solar power by 2022, which will require investment of $100bn.

Armstrong Energy Global’s Chief Executive, Dr Ram Nandakumar says, “This is an exciting time to be building a strong solar business in India, and we are delighted to have constructed our first two solar farms one in Andhra Pradesh and one in Telangana.  With a strong pipeline in place, we are confident of being able to exceed our target of installing and operating 1 GW of solar farms in India by 2020, if not before.  Our strengthened team will enable us to achieve this, and we look forward to the next stage of our development.”
